Nuit de Noel (Happy Club), 1963, Mali, Malick Sidibé
“”We were entering a new era, and people wanted to dance,” Sidibé says. “Music freed us. Suddenly, young men could get close to young women, hold them in their hands. Before, it was not allowed. And everyone wanted to be photographed dancing up close. They had to see it!”“
(from the article published in The Guardian by John Henley, “Malick Sidibé photographs: One Nation Under a Groove”)

Amis des espagnole, 1968, by Malian photographer Malick Sidibé.
Malick Sidibé was among many wonderful photographers featured in the exhibition at the London Barbican “The world was moving.” The exhibition looked at what was happening across the world in the 1960’s and 1970’s - the Civil Rights movement in the US, Apartheid in South Africa, the Vietnam war, life under the Soviet Union in Russia, the influence of American soul music and fashion across the world, the death of Chairman Mao, and so on.
